BACKGROUND
Situated in the mountainous region of southeastern Guinea, the Simandou mine is recognised for its significant high-quality iron ore deposits making it one of the largest untapped reserves of high-grade iron ore globally. Managed by Rio Tinto, a leading global mining company, the project involves collaboration with local and international partners to ensure sustainable and responsible development. The mine employs open-pit mining methods, necessitating careful planning and the use of advanced equipment to mitigate environmental impact.
THE CHALLENGE
The development of the Simandou mine required custom power distribution boards and control systems capable of withstanding the harsh mining environment. Rio Tinto demanded stringent specifications for these systems, including protection ratings, durability and compact size to ensure efficient and safe operations.
THE SOLUTION
B&R partnered with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors to design and manufacture power distribution boards that met Rio Tinto’s specifications.
Power Distribution Boards
Two types of power distribution boards were developed:
- Outdoor Applications: Utilising a modified design of B&R’s Bowen enclosure, these boards were manufactured from 316 stainless steel with an IP56 protection rating and a 40-degree sloping roof to prevent water and sediment build-up.
- Indoor Applications: Boards for use within buildings were manufactured from zinc-coated steel, featuring an IP42 protection rating. They included internal connections for earth leakage testing and dedicated terminals for field connections.
Local Control Stations
All wiring and electrical integration for the local control stations and disconnecting switches were conducted at B&R’s facility in Suzhou, China. The local control stations and disconnecting switches are manufactured from 316 stainless steel, providing IP66 protection and ensure reliability and safety in the mine’s operational areas.
THE RESULT
The collaboration between B&R and Rio Tinto has successfully resulted in the delivery of robust and reliable power distribution solutions tailored to the unique challenges of the Simandou mine. These systems not only meet the high standards required by Rio Tinto but also enhance the overall operational efficiency of the mining project. B&R continues to strengthen its partnership with Rio Tinto and other key stakeholders, positioning itself for future projects by providing fully fit-for-purpose enclosure solutions.
The successful implementation of these systems highlights our commitment to innovation and excellence in the demanding mining sector.
